As any seasoned reader of Airport Business magazine will tell you, the ownership of airports in Europe has undergone major changes over the least 20 years. Today, the private sector is increasingly involved in the operation of airports – already over 20% of European airport operators are either privately owned or run as a public-private partnership.
In its mission to highlight the evolution of Europe’s airports from mere infrastructure providers to competitive, efficient, fully-fledged businesses in their own right, ACI EUROPE has just published its first report on the Ownership of Europe’s Airports. The report benefited from the valued analysis of Seabury Aviation & Aerospace and the publication was kindly sponsored by TAV Airports Holding.
Among the noteworthy findings of the report is that particularly large airports are fully/partly-owned by private investors. In terms of traffic, airports with private shareholders handled 48% of all passengers in Europe last year!
In addition, most European airports are now run as corporatised businesses (74% of all European airports). This again reflects the need for airports to be empowered to pursue a commercial approach in a competitive aviation market.
